Use what already exists

At Kaloha, we make our garments from vintage and existing fabrics. We want the materials already around us to stay in use for longer, rather than producing more and piling up landfills.

We do not believe the answer is to keep producing under a different label, either. Calling something sustainable does not automatically make it so. For us, the most honest place to begin is with what already exists.

An old tablecloth, a curtain, or a piece of fabric that has lain in a cupboard for years can carry small marks, faded colours or signs of use. For us, those details are not flaws. They are resources, not waste.

Working with existing fabric means searching for pieces that can be used again, working in small quantities and letting the available material shape the final piece. We cannot make hundreds of identical aprons in every colour and size, because that is not how found materials work.

We choose high-quality fabrics from a time when things were made to last, with hand-stitched corners and hand-woven patterns.

Working this way makes the process slower and less predictable, but it also makes every piece individual.

Buying less will always matter more than buying perfectly. There is value in asking where it came from, how it was made and whether it will stay with you for a long time.

Our aprons and bathrobes are one small answer to those questions. They begin with what already exists, and we hope they stay in use for many years to come.
